When Dalby hairstylist Kerry Slee opened her first salon six years ago, she never imagined she would land a coveted job behind the scenes at London Fashion Week from Thursday 20 to Sunday 23 September.
Kerry is the owner of Pure Hair in Dalby, seemingly a small town business but one that placed runner-up in Salon of the Year 2016 and was awarded Salon of the Month earlier in March. After attending the Revlon Style Masters hair show in Rome with Revlon Australia in 2015, Kerry set her sights on working London Fashion Week this year. “I applied for the position at the beginning of the year,” she explains. “I was invited over [to England] to do a trial in May and then a few weeks later I found out I was successful and am now part of the Revlon Backstage team.” Kerry is the only Australian hairstylist to be working the event, among a team of 16 other UK stylists.
As well as offering ladies hair services, Pure Hair in Dalby has an in-salon Barber and offers nail and beauty services. Clients can also enjoy a coffee or alcoholic beverage from the store’s mini bar – a touch that makes them “feel at home and fully wind down” according to Kerry. “Hairdressing in a small town such as Dalby is such an amazing opportunity because your clientele becomes your friends and family,” she says. “My business would not be where it is today without them.”
Kerry first trained as an apprentice hairdresser 15-years ago, during which time she received first place in ladies style cutting during her first year. After working in various positions, she brought Pure Hair and Beauty in 2012 and now manages a team of over 10 stylists. “I have always worked well in a team,” says Kerry. “But I think my best training was being the eldest child of nine siblings!”
Kerry names Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor as her fashion icons and cites their “classic beauty” as the inspiration for her work. She also regularly attends hair and beauty exhibitions across Australia. “It is important for us to remain current with the latest trends in our industry,” she says. Kerry hopes that her job at London Fashion Week will lead to more styling opportunities, with her main passions being session styling and bridal styling.
Pure Hair and Beauty is open at 2/59 Condamine Street seven days a week, 9am to 5pm and late nights Wednesday to Thursday 5pm to 9pm.
