Shannon Gralow and Justin Tamblyn are set to star in and co-direct a production of The Last 5 Years at Toowoomba’s Empire Theatre. The Last 5 Years is a two-person musical by American composer Jason Robert Brown. The piece oversees the doomed marriage of two 20-somethings, who meet, marry and divorce over the course of five years.

Toowoomba couple Shannon and Justin will be taking on the roles of Cathy, a struggling actress, and Jamie, a budding novelist, respectively. In the production, Cathy retells the marriage from their divorce, and Jamie retells it from when they first met. During the performance, the pair meet only once, at the time of their wedding.

The Last 5 Years has played internationally to great acclaim, originating in Chicago and spawning further productions off-Broadway in New York, as well as London’s West End. In 2014, Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan starred in the film adaptation,” Shannon said.

“We really pour our blood, sweat and tears into this show and use our own spark and chemistry to enhance the comedy-drama, which gives the audience further insight into this powerful story.”

Shannon and Justin first met on set of The Empire Theatre’s production of Mary Poppins: The Broadway Musical in 2015. They’ve since starred in other productions such as Wicked and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

Shannon has a long history of entertaining, beginning performing at four and possessing a Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance. Justin has toured internationally with Raw Metal Dance CompanyPart of the Empire Theatre’s Homegrown Series, the production includes an entirely local crew. The production is musically directed by Morgan Chalmers, and uses Angela Ponting’s set design.
