It was all happening in Hobart; the Sydney/Hobart yachts arriving, The Taste of Tasmania in full swing, tourists and residents everywhere in the waterfront and Salamanca area.
We were staying a short walk up the hill in one of Hobart’s oldest and most historic areas – Battery Point. Battery Point is famed as one of the more exclusive areas and has a number of large, beautifully restored homes, apartments, and historical cottages. Walking up and down the Kelly steps (constructed in the 1830’s out of massive sandstone blocks) made up for not going to daily gym sessions!
The annual Taste Festival is Tasmania’s largest food and wine festival showcasing local farmers fresh produce and local beer and wines. We wandered around amongst the crowd with a glass of Pinot Noir in hand and ended up choosing a small seafood piazza and hand made Vietnamese prawn rolls.
We all know ‘it is who you know, not what you know’; we had very hospitable connections that invited us to a New Years Eve party in the ‘Pod’. This two-bedroom modular designed apartment was completely built ‘on the ground’ and craned up in twelve hours onto the top of a seven-story office block that overlooks St David’s Park, Salamanca, the cove and the wandering river beyond. The apartment is cantilevered off each end of the office tower that I believe could be a ‘world first’ development – a spectacular sight.
Evening had arrived to join new friends in the Omipod, a wonderful experience from the great food and wine, to the spectacular view and New Year fireworks and remarkable people. I was almost convinced do a PHD, the lady in question was doing her second and that idea for me is still on the drawing board.
It’s wonderful to meet people who are so creative, have a dream and make it happen and here I was celebrating New Year in a most unique location ‘The Pod’. The apartment is available to rent on a per night basis with a minimum 3 night stay long weekends and 4 nights over Easter – put it on your bucket list.
