I recently led one of my garden tours to Thailand for a 12-day trip, timed to coincide with the annual Chiang Mai Flower Festival. Every year on the first weekend of February, the 3-day Chiang Mai Flower Festival takes place featuring a parade, flower exhibition and the Miss Chiang Mai Flower Festival competition.
The hills and valleys of Chiang Mai are ideal natural habitats for a vast variety of tropical and temperate flowers. Most of these flowers bloom early in the year from January to February.
Chiang Mai takes great pride in having maintained its tradition of hosting the annual Chiang Mai Flower Festival for the past 38 years. The ancient Lanna Thai kingdom (which was in the same region) was also famous for its tradition of artistic excellence which is represented at the festival. The annual Chiang Mai Flower Festival features an impressive showcase of traditional and contemporary floral art and Lanna cultural splendour. As you can see from the photos, the floats were fabulous.
The festival also supports the province’s horticultural industry which has steadily grown in importance as one of Thailand’s major exporters. The industry exports fresh cut flowers, ornamental plants, and a range of other horticultural products.
As well as attending the flower festival, we also toured a number of excellent gardens in the area. A trip to Chang Mai at this time of year is highly recommended for gardening enthusiasts.
