Empire Theatres Foundation Patron, Geoffrey Rush has been honoured for his contribution to the arts, being named a Companion of the Order of Australia.

Mr Rush was recognised for his service to the arts as an actor and film producer as well as his mentorship role for aspiring actors.

The former Toowoomba resident and 2012 Australian of the Year recipient has been the patron of the Empire Theatres Foundation since its inception in 2003.

With a 40 year long career as an actor, Rush has achieved an Oscar, a Tony and an Emmy as well as Australian Film Institute honours, three British Academy Awards, two Golden Globes, four Screen Actors Guild Awards and the elite Helpmann Award.

Empire Theatres General Manager, Kerry Saul extended his congratulations to Mr Rush on his prestigious award.

“Mr Rush’s journey to becoming one of the world’s most respected actors started right here in Toowoomba and it’s wonderful to see how far he has managed to go and what a positive impact he has had on theatre and the arts,” he said.

“We are honoured to have Mr Rush as our patron and wish him the very best for the future as he continues to be a role model and mentor for aspiring artists.”
