Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) endorsed the popular pick, Option 2, as the preferred external façade for the new Highfields Library and Community Centre at the Ordinary Meeting of Council on December 17, 2019.

Councillor Ramia said Option 2 was the clear winner with 391 votes, or 80%, of the 490 votes cast during the public voting period in October/November in 2019. “The Option 2 façade features a floating roof and an extended awning facing the Charles and Motee Rogers Reserve. The awning provides a high degree of weather protection and a transition between the natural and built environments. This area will be an attractive outdoor setting for residents to enjoy,” Cr Ramia said.

The new facility will be located on the north-western side of O’Brien Road in the Highfields Cultural Precinct with construction expected to start in early 2020. Furthermore, residents can look forward to using a modern, purpose-built library, customer service centre and community meeting facility that will serve current and future needs of the Highfields and surrounding communities.

Meanwhile, special features will include dedicated reading spaces, including an outdoor reading area facing the Charles and Motee Rogers Bushland Reserve, computer facilities and free Wi-Fi access. project includes upgrades to the road network and car parking in the immediate surrounds.

Construction is scheduled to be completed by the second half of 2021 depending on weather conditions.
