40 flood stories told from the heart Р On Wednesday December 11, the Southern Downs Regional Council held a special celebration of a local history project which documents Southern Downs residents' stories of disaster, recovery and resilience after the 2010/11 flood event.

Mayor Cr Peter Blundell said the DVD was a powerful and moving account of people's personal stories and it was for this reason the project has been called In their own words.

“Our Community Development Officer Pam Burley has worked incredibly hard on this project and there has been an enormous contribution from community members, businesses and emergency personnel.”

Cr Blundell said the project had been funded through the Community Development and Recovery Package which is a joint initiative of the Australian and Queensland governments, under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements.

“It is a fitting tribute to the many who gave their time and effort to re-build the shattered lives of those affected by the 2010/11 floods,” he said.
