Students across the region will soon learn leadership is more than just a badge at Western Downs Regional Council’s Student Leadership Workshops and Community Lunches. Following the success of the Student and Community Leaders Introduction Mixers across the region in 2018, Council has incorporated an interactive student leadership workshop to this year’s events.
One of Australia’s most talented presenters Graham Hyman will lead the three-hour workshops to deliver his message of Leadership – More than a Badge to young people from right across the Western Downs region at events in Chinchilla, Dalby, Miles and Tara. Western Downs Regional Council Mayor Paul McVeigh said the addition of the student leadership workshop this year would add even more value to a great event. “We want to engage our local youth on the Western Downs and this Workshop and Community Lunch will really engage and inspire our future leaders,” he said. “It’s been a really successful event in the past, but this year’s three-hour workshop with Graham Hyman will really give the students a chance to ask questions and learn from each other. It’s important for our young people to be involved in their communities and be proud of their contributions — that’s what we’re aiming for with these events.”
Miles State High School Principal Josette Moffatt said her school’s student leaders were looking forward to the opportunity to connect with local leaders and Councillors. “Miles State High School has been a great supporter of Council initiatives such as this one,” she said. “Our students are looking forward to meeting community leaders and Councillors and creating an ongoing relationship of beneficial support. For each of our student leaders, the mixer and workshop allow for personal and social growth that will continue outside the school gate and be with them in their future years.”
Kaimkillenbun State School Acting Principal Lisa Gillespie said her students were excited to work with other Western Downs students at the Dalby event. “We have four students who will be attending the Leadership Workshop and we’re really excited about building a network in our broader community — especially being a small school,” she said. “Western Downs Regional Council has provided our school with access to a renowned guest speaker and a quality event in our area. Keeping it local helps to further our sense of community, which is really important to everyone at Kaimkillenbun State School.”
The events for selected students and community leaders will be held in Dalby and Tara on Thursday 7 March and in Chinchilla and Miles on Friday 8 March.
