Experience the fun of the annual Historic Leyburn Sprints on 20-21 August, when more than 200 historic, classic and late model performance cars race the clock around the streets of Leyburn.
Visitors can see a diverse range of vehicles, from Mustangs and Morrises to Ferraris and Fiats, Jaguars and Jowetts.
Throughout the weekend, cars will race one at a time around the the former gold-mining town and Cobb and Co. staging point. Some date from the 1920s, some claim no provenance as racing thoroughbreds and some are worth six-figure money.
Spectators are invited to browse the racing cars, the glittering Shannons Show ‘n’ Shine entries, vintage caravans, market stalls and children’s entertainment. Food and drinks will be available across the weekend, including meals prepared by local community organisations, and counter meals from the historic Royal Hotel. The venue will also host a licensed bar, as well as coffee vendors and other stalls with specialty products. Join other motoring enthusiasts and Leyburn locals to continue the party into the evening, when a band strikes up in the local pub.
Competitors will enjoy the camaraderie of fellow car lovers in a laid-back atmosphere with a minimum of racing rules and regulations. The winners of the prize for the fastest outright or class time around the one kilometre track will receive a trophy to treasure—a piece of local rock, fixed with a small plaque.
The Historic Leyburn Sprints celebrates the town’s racing heritage. In 1949, Leyburn hosted the nation’s premier motor race, the Australian Grand Prix. Now in its 21st year, the event continues to draw crowds from across Queensland and interstate. Situated approximately 75 kilometres from Toowoomba, this usually sleepy township is transformed into a noisy, bustling celebration of motorsports for this one weekend in August.
Tickets are available at the gate. Admission for adults is $20 per day or $30 for a weekend pass. Children under 14 are free (school ID required). Gates open at 6.30am, and competition commences at 8am.
