The new electronic vehicle (EV) charging stations were launched in Warwick less than a month ago, but they have already put the Southern Downs on the EV map as an accessible tourist destination and drawing visitors to the region. Reviews from EV enthusiasts on the popular App “PlugShare” have hailed the recently installed chargers as a welcomed addition to the EV map.

Southern Downs Regional Councillor for Economic Development, Regional Promotion and Tourism Rod Kelly said that the charging stations opened yet another door for promoting tourism on the Southern Downs.

“New-age electric vehicle enthusiasts have been quick off the mark to add the Southern Downs to their travel plans,” said Cr Kelly. “The location of the charging stations on Acacia Avenue was identified as a prime location given its access and proximity to Warwick’s town centre. While EV visitors are charging their cars, they have time to explore the Warwick CBD, retail shops, restaurants, cafes and tourist destinations in town.”

As part of its comprehensive partnership with Council, The University of Queensland installed two stations equipped with three bays for simultaneous charging of three vehicles, with the Brisbanemade Veefil 50kW fast charger and 22kW twin charger.

The stations are located in the Acacia Avenue carpark behind Target Country with Council providing a lease for the land and access to existing electricity conduits.
