With Olympic glory firmly in her sight, Rebbeca Welke is proof that dreams do not work unless you do. Having trained tirelessly in the pool for hours every day, this 2014 Glennie Senior is one step closer to her dreams after being spotted by an American talent scout.
Rebecca has always been a standout in the pool, bringing home armfuls of trophies at every school swimming carnival and winning easily against her peers. At the Queensland State Short Course competitions, this talented breaststroker walked away with plenty of medals, and even the opportunity to represent Queensland at the Australian Swimming Championships in Adelaide in 2013.
Bec is currently ranked 15th in Australia in the 50m breaststroke, and was already on an Elite Athlete Bursary to the University of Southern Queensland when she was spotted by a talent scout in August 2015. Leaving familiar Toowoomba behind, Rebecca has decided to transfer her studies to the University of Toledo in Ohio, where she will join a team of 25 elite female athletes in August this year.
After visiting the college in January Rebecca said, “I was overwhelmed the first time I saw everything there, at times it doesn’t feel real that I’m actually going to be competing at a higher level. I would never have believed that I would be packing up everything and moving to America to follow my dream.”
Although Rebecca will be training in the United States, this rising star looks set to bring home gold for Australia in future Olympic Games.
