Southern Downs Regional Council is looking ahead with a new plan for the future, launching its Shaping Southern Downs campaign, and inviting all residents to take part in the community engagement process.
Shaping Southern Downs will encourage investment in the region and aims to grow the population to 50,000 residents. The region’s growth will support a wider range of businesses, industries and services in the area and provide a range of jobs for locals and support infrastructure improvements. The plan will also form a foundation for SDRC’s Corporate Plan and new Southern Downs Planning Scheme. Southern Downs Mayor, Tracy Dobie said Shaping Southern Downs is an opportunity to develop a plan for the whole region while continuing to celebrate each village and town’s unique identity. “We are a diverse region and each community is different and we want to hear from each and every town about what they want for their community that will contribute to making us who we are as the Southern Downs region,” Cr Dobie said. “We want to understand what people value about living in the area and their vision and aspirations for their townships and the wider region.” Cr Dobie encouraged all residents to take part in the community engagement process.”
Council is committed to working alongside the community to develop a shared vision for the Southern Downs. “I urge everyone in the community to provide feedback and share their input and ideas; have your say about what are the most important priorities for our region’s future.”
The consultation period will be undertaken by consultants Ethos Urban from Saturday 9 June and will include community workshops, focus groups, pop up events and consultation sessions. Community members are invited to complete the online survey when it launches through the Shaping Southern Downs webpage. Copies of Shaping Southern Downs will be available online and at Council service centres and facilities.
