The Downlands College Toowoomba have made a big change in their kitchen, recently partnering with Chartwells, a company who cater to boarding schools and colleges, the Downlands College kitchen and dining areas have been completely refurbished and taken on a culinary adventure.
Downlands Principal, Mr Stephen Koch, and Head of Boarding, Mr Ian Bulkin, are delighted with the partnership, “Providing fresh, appealing and nutritionally balanced meals which meet the diverse dietary needs of growing young people is really important. Creating an atmosphere where healthy bodies and healthy minds can be nurtured and sustained certainly makes a big difference to building the best learning environment. The smart food program is intended to develop healthy eating habits; our students are very happy with the fresh, tasty food.”
Chartwells have earned high praise from Downlands Senior students, Ellie Johnson, Albert Dyvenor and Mike Vovola, who are happy with the new meal plans, “Everything is so fresh, and we feel a lot better. Every meal is excellent.” “Meals are healthier, and I like it,” adds Albert. Junior students, Kiama Mailman and Billy Qualischefski, eagerly look forward to mealtimes, “hot meals on a cold day is the best” says Billy. Year 11 student, Abbey Coveney, said that the physical changes to the kitchen, servery and dining areas have had a beneficial effect on students and staff, “Everyone just likes coming into the Dining room to eat together. It is nice to eat meals with our Houseparents; it’s like we are at home. The community experience is better; and everyone seems very happy with the great food and relaxed ambience,”she said.
