Children from 10 different schools in the local region will be given the opportunity to Step into Stories as they participate in a celebration of children’s literature.

Step into Stories is an annual event run by the Darling Downs branch of the Queensland School Library Association. It provides an invaluable opportunity for children to experience the wonder of storytelling as they engage with a variety of authors and illustrators.

The event also exposes them to new book titles and genres, encourages reading for pleasure and inspires children to write their own stories. The authors will provide students with an insight into the writing process. They will walk them through where they get their own ideas from, their writing, the editing stage, through to the published book.

This year the event is being coordinated by the teacher librarians at Mater Dei Primary School, Toowoomba and St Stephen’s Catholic School, Pittsworth. The visiting authors this year are Irena Kobald, Rebecca Johnson and Tim Harris. Irena Kobald is a local award-winning author whose book My Two Blankets won the Children’s Book Council Picture Book of the Year award in 2015. Rebecca Johnson is the author of the Steve Parish storybook collections, the Juliet Nearly a Vet series and the Vet Cadet series. She is also a passionate primary school science teacher. Tim Harris will travel from New South Wales to talk to students about his hilarious book series, Mr. Bambuckle’s Remarkables and Exploding Endings.
