Year 12 Assumption College student Mary Higgins is an all-rounder a sportswoman, academic and an upstanding member of the wider school community.

In Year 11 she took out the trifecta for School Age Sport Champion in swimming, athletics and cross country. Her dream of securing a place on the Darling Downs netball team was crushed when she tore her ACL during trials but every cloud has a silver lining, and while this injury was devastating, it enabled her to spend more time with her nose in the books.

This year, Mary has balanced the challenges of Year 12 with being School Captain as well as being an involved member of the community. She participated in the Lion’s Youth of the Year Competition and was awarded The Public Speaker of the Year Award for her topical speech, Social Media β€” Friend or Foe? She was also awarded the Zonta Women in Leadership Award by the Warwick branch. Mary also proudly helped restart The Kindness Crew at Assumption College.

Her strong sense of humanity and solid work ethic were rewarded this year with two of the school’s five major awards: The Sisters of Mercy Community Spirit Award and College Dux. Mary loves a challenge and has a quietly determined competitive streak which drives her to reach high standards in everything she does. Underneath it all is a gentle, kind and empathic soul.

In 2019, Mary will repeat Year 12 in French on a year-long exchange in Belgium. When she returns she hopes to study Neuro-Psychology.
