Barry Bernoth’s modest electrical appliance shop of the 1970s has grown and changed over the years, as further neighbouring properties were acquired.

The complex, now with a 300 metre frontage to Ruthven Street in Toowoomba, is known as the Bernoth Lifestyle Precinct. “We attributed our successful results during those years to loyal employees, good product knowledge, and a firm commitment to customer service. I think in those days, and still today, it’s about loyalty and support,” says Barry.

Following the sale of the business to a national retailer in the late 1990s, the Bernoth family focused on property

acquisitions and development. Today, the Bernoth Properties group has a portfolio of approximately 70 commercial and retail tenants. “Our tenants are our partners in business, and we still aim to offer loyalty and support wherever we can. I find it very satisfying to see the hard work and dedication of some of our tenants paying off, as they grow their business, often from modest beginnings,” says Barry.

The expanding Bernoth Lifestyle Precinct includes 661, a medical and allied health centre, The Bernoth Centre which features a range of local and national operators, with Freedom Furniture set to join the centre in the coming months.

Construction of the new South Central retail, office and residential development will commence later this year, with plans to include a cafe. As the property group grows, the next generation of the Bernoth family has joined the business to assist.

Barry’s daughter Amelia Lawrence now oversees the Bernoth group finances, and his son Mitchell Bernoth manages new business opportunities. “Dad has achieved a lot in his lifetime, and it’s important the next generation build on this solid foundation,” says Mitchell.
