The design and construction tender has been awarded to the Toowoomba-based Queensland construction company McNab Developments for the Toowoomba Regional Council’s (TRC) Principal Depot Project.
TRC Property Services portfolio leader Cr Geoff MacDonald said the construction of the project is expected to start on site in the next couple of months. “The project will deliver a modern, intelligent and sustainable depot to meet the current and future needs of Council staff and the Toowoomba Region,” said McDonald. “The contract includes the design and construction of a central operations and management building, three workshop buildings, a central store, a nursery and a Toowoomba State Emergency Centre Regional Unit and Toowoomba Group Headquarters at 24 Nass Road in Charlton.
“The new SES facility will see SES and Council resources co-located. It will enable the SES and Council to share information, resources and new technologies and provide a co-ordinated response in an emergency. The SES facility is jointly funded by the Queensland Government and Toowoomba Regional Council.” McDonald said the depot is required to replace ageing facilities at the Toowoomba Nursery, Oakey and Harristown East and West. “Council reviewed the suitability of facilities across the region and considered the increasing operational, maintenance and compliance costs associated with running these facilities.
“Through this process, Council identified the need to replace these existing facilities with a new major depot which meets current requirements,” said McDonald. “The depot will deliver a modern facility with improved amenities and a better, safer working environment for all staff. It will also include a number of sustainable design elements focused on water and energy efficiency to minimise the building’s environmental impact.” The project is expected to be completed in early 2020 if weather permits.
