Henry and Mary Wagner have been successful, no matter what your definition of success is. They are the brains behind the nationally renowned company Wagners, and own Australia’s only privately-funded airport, Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport.
A Toowoomba local, Henry attended Middle Ridge Primary School and St Mary’s College up until the age of 15 where he decided to leave school and become an apprentice stonemason, where he worked with his father and brother for several years before starting his own company, Wagner Bulk Carriers. His wife Mary was born in Warwick and attended Clintonvale State School, Assumption College in Warwick and All Hallows in Brisbane. Mary then spent four years of nursing at Brisbane’s Mater Hospital before pursuing a nursing career in Toowoomba.
Henry and Mary were married in 1958 and have since had four sons: John, Denis, Neill and Joe. Together, they built their family business, Wagners, from a small operation employing six people into a large company boasting nearly 800 employees. The dynamic duo will be sharing their story at the 2016 Chamber’s Secrets of My Success lunch at the Empire Church Theatre on Friday April 15 from 12:30pm until 2:00pm.
Chamber president, Ms Joy Mingay, said the event was an opportunity for the business community to network together and hear about the Wagners’ journey – from humble beginnings to great success. “Henry and Mary Wagner are terribly inspirational and have so much wisdom to impart to others in business,” Ms Mingay said. “This will be one of the first times Henry and Mary have spoken at an event together, and we are bound to hear some incredible advice from them.”
