One of Toowoomba’s most feted events, Weetwood Race Day, was held this year on Saturday, May 2 at Clifford Park Racecourse. As one of the oldest sprint handicaps in Australia, Weetwood took its greatest step from being a local race day to a national event, coinciding with its 125th anniversary. Two other historical milestones were celebrated – the prize money on offer was the highest ever conducted at the racecourse and the stars of the Queensland racing industry delivered the largest race meeting on record.
Thankfully for everyone, the event went ahead as planned despite the downpour of the day prior. Six-year old Mr Favulous won the 2015 Audi Centre Toowoomba Weetwood Handicap to the delight of trainer Don Baker and jockey Jeff Lloyd. Behind the victor was Pillar Of Creation ahead of Choice Bro in third place.
Sharing the spotlight with the stars of the track were, as in every year, the fashionable attendees. Many came dressed to impress for the Hannas Fashions on the Field competition, putting on their best looks and showcasing some of the most creatively designed dresses. Winner Bellinda Haase took first prize, followed by runner-up Jessica Smith and second runner-up Alana Aspinall. Ben Crowley was crowned the best-dressed male.
The highly entertaining day with gorgeous weather only serves to build anticipation for when the races roll around again on 9 May, 2016.
