Doctor Sharyn Donaldson has been named Toowoomba Zonta Club‘s Woman of the Year at the club’s International Women’s Day Luncheon on Friday 9 March for her outstanding achievements and generous service to the community.
The luncheon provided an opportunity for the community to celebrate and hear about inspirational women in the region, and to award those who have excelled in supporting the community and who have become role models to the next generation of female leaders. Previous award recipients were present at this years luncheon, including Mary Wagner, Joy Mingay, Gitie House, and Lititia Shelton.
This years winner Dr Donaldson has been commended for her dedication as a medical practitioner, enterprising business operator, and community volunteer. Dr Donaldson was instrumental in the establishment of the Diagnostic breast clinic at Toowoomba’s St Andrew’s Hospital, which has improved the quality of cancer screening and care. She established Blush Cancer Care Inc. to support, educate and advocate for breast cancer patients in Toowoomba and the areas serviced by the Darling Downs. This service also supplies Breast Care Nurses for medical support and education. This has now expanded to the Blush Goes Bush roadshow.
Sharyn has recently initiated a pilot research project with USQ, working with 24 women affected by breast cancer.
Sharyn has also established a business called The Sauce Kitchen, which includes a cooking school, kitchen shop, cafe, and catering services. Her career has been extremely diverse, with her most recent endeavour being General Practitioner training and returning to general practice.
The Zonta Woman of the Year celebrates female members of the region who have displayed excellent leadership capabilities, and have made significant contribution to support and enhance the social, economic, cultural, or environmental prosperity of the Toowoomba region.
