The finalists for the 2019 Vocal Australia Australian A Capella Awards (AUSACA) have been announced and, for the second year running, Downlands College vocal ensemble, Gryphonix, has been selected as a National Finalist.
AUSACA is the premier competition for Secondary Schools and Open A Capella performance groups, and attracts entries from all over Australia. An expert panel of judges score video auditions with the best groups contesting the AUSACA Championships in Melbourne in September.
Downlands is the only regional Australian school selected as a National Finalist. The College will compete against ensembles from Grace Lutheran College (Qld), Marist Sisters’ College (NSW), Melbourne Girls’ College (Vic), Peninsula Grammar (Vic), Richard Johnson Anglican School (NSW) Scotch College Adelaide (SA), St Aloysius College (Vic) and Star of the Sea College (Vic).
In their debut at 2018 AUSACA, Gryphonix performed Down Under from Men at Work, Man in the Mirror by Michael Jackson and Ghostbusters by Ray Parker Jr, winning Best Comedy in the Open School division with their rendition of Ghostbusters and placing Third overall.
Downlands Principal, Mr Stephen Koch, is very proud of these achievements, “The selection of Gryphonix as an AUSACA finalist, the recent short-listing of the Downlands Performing Arts program in the 2019 Australian Education Awards, and success of the College Play Imprint, proves the College continues to reinforce its standing as a school of excellence for The Arts at a local, state and national level.”
