Local community organisations will deliver hay bales to provide much-needed drought relief to farmers in the Southern Downs. Rural Aid, Purple Dove, Stanthorpe Agricultural Society and the Granite Belt Brewery will deliver the hay bales along with other farming supplies to Stanthorpe Showgrounds on Wednesday 31 October with Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) helping coordinate efforts.

Road trains will deliver 240 large hay bales to the showgrounds while Purple Dove will distribute food hampers, dog food and lick blocks to the region’s hardest-hit farmers. Southern Downs Mayor Tracy Dobie said organising the hay drop has been a community effort, and highlighted the efforts of Rural Aid in organising the delivery of drought relief supplies to the showgrounds. “Once again, our community has come together to provide relief for our farmers during one of the worst droughts in our region’s history. The delivery of hay and other necessities to the Stanthorpe Showgrounds has involved a lot of people pitching in and doing their part. While these efforts go a long way in helping ease the burden on farmers, I know the community will continue coming together to find ways to help our region get through this drought.”

General Manager of Rural Aid Wayne Thomson said Rural Aid is at the forefront of providing support to the region’s farmers. “This drought has been devastating for farmers and rural communities, and we are pleased to help out in the Stanthorpe area.”

Through their Buy a Bale of Pale Ale campaign, the Granite Belt Brewery has raised proceeds to help fund Rural Aid’s efforts in supporting farmers in the region. SDRC’s staff have also raised funds for Rural Aid through their monthly Casual for a Cause fundraising campaign. The Stanthorpe Agricultural Society will coordinate efforts at the showgrounds on the day, and SDRC will provide machinery to load and unload hay.

If any interested farmers have not registered to request hay, please contact Rural Aid on 1300 327 624 or register online.
