Our Lady of the Southern Cross year 12 student Kacy Miaco was selected to participate in the Young Scholars Program, hosted at the University of Queensland over the Christmas holidays.
Kacy was one of 200 students from across Queensland who participated in the program, designed to nurture and develop future leaders and give them valuable insight into University and College life. Entry into the program is competitive. Students who are offered a place in the program must have achieved academic excellence, leadership accolades and have made significant contributions to their school or community. Throughout the five-day program, Kacy had the chance to meet like minded students. She was able to explore a variety of study fields, many that she had not encountered as part of the school curriculum.
Students also participated in a number of collaborative forums and heard from leading thinkers, as well as participating in a range of social, sporting and cultural activities. “I had the privilege to hear from aspiring leaders and thinkers, as well as engage in discussions and collaborative forums which reinforced my skills in leadership and approach to future challenges,” Kacy said. The program presents students with an opportunity for academic extension and enrichment, and is centred around igniting passion for leadership, academic achievement and community development in young people. “The academic program not only enriched my passions for leadership and aspirations for academic achievement, it enabled me to develop diverse friendships from all around Queensland,” Kacy said.
