It’s an exciting time for Stanthorpe as the streetscape beautification project for the CBD continues to gain momentum.

Council’s project staff are working with contractors to fine tune plans for Stage 1 in High Street and make sure the updated concept reflects the community’s vision for a town centre that manages the needs of shoppers, businesses, tourists, cars and pedestrians, while still maintaining that special Stanthorpe feel. Council is also in discussions with the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) to obtain sign-offs on proposed designs.

Southern Downs Councillor Stephen Tancred said he looked forward to the streetscape project progressing to the next stage. “Stanthorpe is renowned for its vibrant and diverse food, music and arts scene and the CBD precinct is alive with the town’s unique country charm and quirky localised art,” Councillor Tancred said. “The streetscape project is a labour of love for the community and it’s important that the details of the plan reflect the community’s vision to design a town-centre for both locals and visitors to enjoy. It has to be practical but welcoming.

“There have already been a number of exciting enhancements over the years, including Fromes Lane and the Rogers Street carpark, and the next stage of the project will further enhance the town’s identity.”

After the next round of consultation with TMR on some updated and improved crossing designs, and Councillors have been briefed, Council will engage in further community and business consultation to discuss the proposed formal crossing in High Street and maximise car parking spaces in the area. For all the latest Council news and information, download the ‘My SDRC’ App or visit www.sdrc.qld.gov.au.
